Prof. Wang Jian is the co-founder and director of BGI. He was the organizer of 1% Human Genome Project and Hybrid Rice Genome Sequencing Project. He also led the projects of sequencing of SARS virus genome and the development of SARS diagnosis assay, the Silkworm Genome Sequencing and Analysis, the Chicken Genome Sequencing and Analysis and Bird flu Virus Genome Sequencing and Analysis. He is the key player for the collaboration of BGI with organizations from UK and USA to launch the 1000 Genomes Project.
Prof. Wang Jun was a key player in establishing the Beijing Genomics Institute and is executive director of BGI. Prof. Wang has been responsible for the bioinformatics and sequencing parts of several large genome projects (human, mouse, pig, rice, silkworm, chicken, SARS), including genome assembly, annotation, expression, genome duplication, comparative genomics, molecular evolution, genome variation analysis, database construction and methodology development. He was appointed full professor at the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2003 and visiting professor at Beijing University in 2004. He was guest professor at Aarhus University and SDU from 2004 to 2006, continued from September 2006 as a tenured Ole Romer professor and is currently professor at the Copenhagen University.
Dr. Jean Weissenbach is the head of CEA Genoscope. He has authored about 500 research papers and ranks second among molecular biologists/geneticists in the ISI citation count. He is member of EMBO, of the French Academy of Sciences and received about 10 prices and awards including Platinum Technology 21st Century Pioneer Partnership Award from the Smithsonian Institution, European Society of Human Genetics Award, Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research, The Gairdner Foundation International Award and several major prices from the French Academy of Sciences, Gold Medal of the NATIONAL CENTRE FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH, 2008 (Highest honor for Science in France, awarded once a year). He has been editor in several international journals in genetics or genomics.
